The Night Manager: Review 040

The Night Manager

This book was… atrocious. There are fist-sized paragraphs that are one run-on sentence just describing things. I don’t know how one can go half an entire page just describing a boat, and with the second half describe the boat moving. For the entire first half of the book, you’ve got little to no idea what’s going on. The entire first chapter is literally about a hotel and the guy who owns it having fake hair. That’s it. There’s also a lot thats unresolved. There is one major villain everyone’s in a tizzy about, but then midway through the book a second one is introduced that’s just as evil. There’s a bluff involved later on, but it’s never really addressed as to whether the bad guys are ever arrested. The book also jumps around A LOT so I was confused 98% of the time. I hated all of the characters. I had hoped that, as a spy book, there would actually be some spy tendencies and whatnot. There were, for all of one chapter. After that it’s really confusing politics and a lot of pointless filler.

This is the kind of book that seems like a movie screenplay reformatted. Like it should never have been a book, but the franchise tried in order to make more money. There really wasn’t much to redeem this book for me, outside of that one chapter or so where things got heavy and I was finally interested.
